What is vaping – a beginner’s guide and answers to the most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Vaping is gradually replacing regular cigarettes, and if you’re considering trying it, you probably have a lot of questions. How does it all work, what exactly do the e-liquids contain, and what are the legislative restrictions or bans in the Czech Republic or elsewhere in the world?

Consider this information useful if you want to start vaping or are researching it. We will look at all parts of vaping, including the principles and types of e-liquids, but on Vapequipment.cz you can only buy devices — batteries, tanks or complete kits — not e-liquids. Those are sold separately and need to be purchased from specialized retailers.

What is vaping?

Vaping is a method of inhaling vapor from an electronic device that converts a liquid into vapor.

You will encounter various types of devices from simple disposable e-cigarettes to more complex models where you can customize almost everything. Each option has pros and cons and the choice depends on your preferences — whether you want simplicity and low maintenance (POD systems, disposables) or more power and adjustability (BOX mods). As for e-liquids, the basic division is by carrier: PG (propylene glycol) gives a stronger throat “hit” and better flavor delivery, has lower viscosity; VG (vegetable glycerin) produces thicker vapor and a smoother draw, is thicker and works better in higher-performance tanks. Many e-liquids are mixtures of PG/VG in various ratios that you choose according to the desired experience and compatibility with the coil. E-liquids with hemp (CBD) extracts are then natural and all substances in the liquid come from hemp that has been purified of psychoactive substances like THC.

It’s also useful to know basic safety rules, how to properly maintain devices and what rules apply when traveling or using them in public. That will save you trouble and help you vape more comfortably.

Why do people switch to vaping?

The main reason is usually an effort to reduce the risks associated with smoking conventional cigarettes. Vaping does not contain tar or carbon monoxide, which are the main harmful substances from regular cigarettes.

Because e-liquids do not necessarily have to contain nicotine, vaping is for many also the first step toward quitting smoking entirely.

Composition and main parts of an e-cigarette

An electronic cigarette usually has three main parts:

  • Battery – the device’s power source
  • Tank (cartridge, clearomizer or tank) – where the e-liquid is stored
  • Coil – the part that heats the liquid

Depending on the device type, these parts can be integrated — for example a cartridge may contain the coil, so you simply screw it onto the battery.

Some models also have power regulation, a display or replaceable batteries. This allows you to adjust vapor intensity and flavor.

Difference between vaping and conventional smoking

Conventional smoking means burning tobacco. Burning produces smoke full of tar, carbon monoxide and hundreds of other harmful substances from the chemicals present, which enter the lungs and the bloodstream.

Vaping does not involve combustion. Vapor is produced that contains fewer substances than cigarette smoke. That does not mean vaping is completely risk-free.

The main difference is the mechanism — smoking = burning tobacco, vaping = vaporizing a liquid. This affects the composition of inhaled substances and the overall experience.

Difference between vaping and IQOS-type products

Vaping is based on liquid e-liquids, while IQOS heats real tobacco. Both methods produce a vapor instead of smoke, which is the main common feature.

IQOS contains tobacco with nicotine, whereas with vaping you can choose how much nicotine you want — or omit it entirely, or opt for hemp-based liquids.

The long-term health effects of vaping and IQOS-type products are still being studied. Compared to conventional cigarettes, however, they are generally considered less risky.

Effect of nicotine on health

Nicotine is a highly addictive substance that affects the brain and nervous system. Regular use increases the risk of dependence and can lead to more frequent and intense use.

It acts on the body by speeding up heart rate, raising blood pressure and putting strain on blood vessels. Over the long term, this can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

In adolescents, nicotine additionally affects brain development, which is not yet complete. This can impact concentration and memory.

Although vaping does not contain tar or carbon monoxide like regular cigarettes, nicotine remains the main cause of addiction and health risks associated with e-cigarettes.

How to choose a suitable e-cigarette

First consider what you expect from vaping. While vaping based on glycerin and propylene glycol is more similar to cigarette smoking (you can vape throughout the day), vaping hemp liquids is more subtle and its effect lasts much longer, so you don’t vape as often.

Also look at maintenance needs. Some e-cigarettes require coil replacements, others have whole cartridges that you simply swap. If you don’t want to deal with more complex servicing, choose a simpler type.

Device types: POD, disposables

POD systems are small, lightweight and easy to use. The device consists of a battery and a cartridge. E-liquids can be refilled (open systems), or whole cartridges are replaced (closed systems). They are suitable for beginners or those who want vaping without unnecessary complexity.

BOX mod devices offer higher power, more adjustment options and often replaceable batteries. The result is stronger vapor and longer battery life. BOX mods are appreciated by more experienced users who want greater control over their device.

Disposable e-cigarettes are used until the e-liquid or battery runs out, then discarded. They are practical for travel or as a first vaping experience. The downsides are higher cost with frequent use and more waste.

Safety and health risks of vaping

Vaping is often compared to conventional smoking and is perceived as a less harmful option. Even so, electronic cigarettes contain substances that can affect health, and they should be handled responsibly.

Electronic cigarettes do not operate by burning tobacco. With vaping you do not inhale tar or carbon monoxide, which are the main harmful substances from regular cigarettes. Because of that you are exposed to lower amounts of toxic substances.

Doctors emphasize that completely avoiding nicotine is the best choice for health. Inhaling any substance carries some risk, and vaping is no different in this regard.

Maintenance and cleaning of an e-cigarette

An e-cigarette works best when you clean it from time to time. Residue from e-liquid can affect flavor and performance over time. Wipe the mouthpiece daily to prevent dirt buildup.

We recommend cleaning the tank once a week and replacing the cotton or coil as needed. If you taste a burnt flavor, it’s time to replace them.

Use warm mild water or isopropyl alcohol on glass parts. Electronic components must not be immersed in water. When reassembling, check that everything seals properly so e-liquid does not leak.

Battery life and charging

The battery is the heart of every e-cigarette, so treat it sensibly. Do not use damaged cells and always charge them with the recommended charger. Improper charging can shorten battery life or cause problems.

It is recommended to charge the battery when it drops below 20–30%, but full discharge is not a good idea.

Using e-cigarettes in public

In the Czech Republic, vaping is banned where conventional smoking is prohibited, such as in schools, hospitals, public transport and restaurants. If you’re unsure, watch for signs — it is often clearly indicated what is allowed, or ask the staff.

In some places, like train stations or shopping centers, rules may be stricter. The operator can impose their own ban even if the law does not specifically address the space.

On the street or outdoors the ban usually does not apply (though not everywhere — for example bus stops should be avoided because regular smoking is also prohibited there and it’s not worth testing legal limits). It’s polite to consider others, especially children and people who may find the vapor unpleasant.

Traveling and transporting e-cigarettes

When traveling by plane, keep the e-cigarette in your carry-on luggage. Do not put it in checked baggage due to the fire risk from the battery. Liquid e-liquids follow the same rules as other liquids — max 100 ml per sealed container, all in a transparent bag.

Check the rules of the specific airline before travel. The vast majority of airlines prohibit the use of e-cigarettes during flight, even if you have them with you.

On trains or buses the rules are similar to smoking. Most carriers do not allow vaping inside vehicles. Check information in advance to avoid fines or being asked to leave the vehicle.
